How to work schooling bass in the Fall

Fall can be one of the best times to catch schooling bass if you know where to look. Bass will migrate from their summertime haunts following baitfish, setting up on key ambush points along the way. Look for points and humps in close proximity to the river channel in early fall. As the water cools, baitfish will move shallower and into the creeks, with hungry bass sure to follow.

When targeting bass like this, soft jerkbaits are my baits of choice. Z-Man Scented Jerk ShadZ rigged weightless or on a belly hook are hard to beat.

In lakes where baitfish are predominantly smaller, I'll switch to a Finesse TRD rigged on a 1/15 Finesse ShroomZ jighead.

I work the TRD just like the Jerk ShadZ, a steady retrieve with pops and jerks. The Finesse TRD has an awesome erratic action, mimicking a small baitfish perfectly. Targeting areas with gizzard shad can also be a productive pattern.

Bass will typically move shallow in wolf packs looking for the larger forage. They can be found on or around shallow bars and points where rock and sand are present. Larger baits such as a 3/8 oz. Project Z Swim Jig, or 6" Z-Man SwimmerZ rigged on 3/8 oz JigheadZ are my baits of choice this time of year because they allow you to cover water and provoke reaction strikes from cruising bass.

This can be one of the best times of year to load up on healthy bass. Employ these tactics on your local lakes and I'm sure you'll find success.
