Swim Jig Fishing

The Project Z Swim Jig is a killer right now since bream are moving to their beds and vegetation is getting thicker on many lakes and rivers. Swim jigs allow you to fish through grass and lily pads easier than many other baits and the bass are looking for a little payback on the bream and bluegill. Breaking Bream, Baby Bass, and Black/Blue are my color choices for mimicking bream and bluegill in clear or stained water. Citrus Shad, Threadfin Shad, and Pearl Ghost are my go to for the shad spawn in clear or stained water. I use different trailers to help control depth at different retrieve speeds depending on what the fish want that day. DieZel MinnowZ and RaZor ShadZ will help you stay shallow and slow, or for a faster and a little deeper retrieve GrubZ and Turbo CrawZ work perfectly. I focus on areas that have fairly thick vegetation or shallow timber as well as sunfish spawning areas and docks. For the rod and reel setup I prefer a 7' medium heavy rod with a fast tip and 6:3-7:1 reel. You will be making fairly long casts in vegetation and around heavy cover so braid is a must, I find 30lb. works great for skipping and has plenty of strength to get the fish out. Swim jig fishing allows me to quickly cover water snag free and it's also giving the fish a different look for those tournament days. Tight lines guys!!! -Kelly Keith, Z-Man Pro.
